If you feel a dip in your energy in the afternoon, here are a few things it could be:
🩸🍭 BLOOD SUGAR DIP OR CRASH. This is what everyone always thinks it is, and it could very well be. Most often triggered by what you ate for lunch; some food choices cause more blood sugar excursions than others. //SOLUTION: Change how you fuel yourself. Book a call with me to learn how (link in bio).
⏰ NATURAL DROP IN ENERGY as part of human circadian biology. We just have a natural “lull” in our energy levels in the mid-afternoon. //SOLUTION: Anticipate it. Try not to book in your most mentally demanding tasks during this time of day. Schedule 15 minutes to listen to some energizing music or do some desk stretching to get blood and energy cranking.
🔥 THERMOGENESIS. The body generates heat as it digests lunch, and this can have a mildly sedative effect. //SOLUTION: Try cooling off your body temp. Go stand outside and get some fresh air.
🧠 MENTAL DRAIN. The lagging energy you are experiencing might not come from your *body* at all; it might be a consequence of an overburdened nervous system. //SOLUTION: Practice productivity sprints, where you focus and work hard for 25 minutes, then completely rest, refocus your eyes, and do something mentally relaxing and unproductive for 5. Wash, rinse, repeat in 30-minute intervals.
🌬 YOU AREN’T BREATHING. If you feel yourself majorly dragging ass at 3pm, think about the last time you took a good, deep breath. Chances are you’ve been slumped in front of your computer, breathing into the uppermost 10% of your lungs. //SOLUTION: Sit up straight, and take 6 deep breaths. Oxygen is energy too.
[ 💦 Honourable mention: You need water. It seems likely that a dozen or so peeps will suggest this in the comments. It’s a less compelling factor for me. If you feel THIRSTY, then drink. If you feel TIRED, it’s probably something else. But sure, take a sip of water; it’s not gonna hurt.]
☕️ 🍬 Step away from the coffee pot and the vending machine.
